Van Gogh Games

Drawing on both sides of earth!

It’s a kind of magic!

What could be the most powerful magical wound? A gold transformer? A teleport or invisibility power? Well no, there is something much better –> A wand that will transform sadness into happiness! Well you are probably thinking that this does not exists, but check this out and give it a try, hopefully u will feel our excitement and may it be doubled and doubled.

So what happened?

Little Miss Orange

I took a day off from work feeling burnout. Though I am cheerful, there are some days I feel so blue. Purple bear come across my mind. Red is for my anger, Blue is for my sadness. N Purple is my teddy bear. I put a ball next to him, but he is feeling empty n doesn’t feel like playing. I think I should put another mood to it, I put green and brown which…

Hopper Game (on progress)

Midnight Muse

This post will record the progress on Hopping Game I play with my friend Vari.

Hopper game is the game where the first person sees an object and they describes it to the second person by words, and the second person describes to the third person, and so on. When it reaches the last person, the original object will be shown to all players, and they can see how far the original object has change through words.

This hopper game is the same, but using drawings instead of words.

I will edit this post according to our progress, until the game ends.

So, to start my friend Vari draw this image first

I was thinking this picture is so lonely without colors, and lately I’m crazy about watercolor. The petals in the picture looks like butterflies, so I want to add butterflies too.

This is what I came up with…

Hopper Game #2

François:  I have done a facebook page (here) to share the Hopper Game concept. If you don’t know what is a Hopper Game, please read this. Natasa, my drawing buddy from Slovenia was enthusiat to start a game with me! And so I was looking forward to see her drawing. I was feeling like  a kid who waits for a present, and like a student who waits for his exam…

Natasa: So, I had the priviledge and challenge of choising the first painting/drawing. I think it took me longer to choose something than acctually drawing it. The instruction was to choose a piece of art or artist that is not well know so the next person can not recognize it. I knew I wanted to pay tribute to a Polish artist, since I’ve spend an important year of my life in Krakow, Poland. I wanted to translate their artistic spirit, peace and inspiration that I felt from that culture. Also I wanted to choose something simple in theme, so Jan Matejko was out. I then chose Stanisław Wyspiański and his Helenka with flowers.

I took the motive as it is, and used very strong colors. I wanted the colors and strokes to speak about the Polish history and wholehearted strong people. I listened to my favourite polish music, whic is majestic, optimistic, full of life, the “joie de vivre”. As I dived deeper into observing and drawing, my mood changed, became more reflective, still, calm. I swiched to different music as well; softer, sadder, melodramatic…I noticed more and more details in the original painting, that I didn’t see before. It was a journey into the painting and inwards.

François: Wow, my first feeling about Natasa’s drawing was great. I like that kind of drawing that gives you a strong impression at the first look, it’s so immediat, that this impression came just before the brain can tell you what the drawing is about (have you ever notice it?)! Strong colors black and red, I really like it. Those colors where a bit like a whirlpool of strong dark feelings and thoughts. But at the other hand, and after better looking, this girl with a delicate face was looking fragile and sad… and her hand moving to that thing in front of her.. Like she was trying to touch it, it was addind mystery. Why she wants to reach it? Is she sads because she can’t have something? Good drawings are asking questions. First I didn’t know how to react to such a drawing. I was feeling a bit shy, because I was thinking (but I’m not sure about it) that this sadness in the drawing was linked to Natasa. So it took me a bit of time to know how to react to this sincerity. I also wanted to try to console her (or the girl of the drawing?). This girl on the drawing was also looking young, and I was thinking that often, the sadness we have when we are kids then disappear when we get older and wiser. So I was drawing a younger girl, with a big child sadness, that is being unable to reach candies on a table! I also removed the darkness and did a very light drawing… I also wanted to draw more things on the drawing, to stand back from the situation. So now we see this sadness with more wiseness, like something that will disappear when the girl will get older. I wish Natasa or the girl on the drawing will be encouraged by my drawing 🙂

My first reaction to Francois’ drawing was wao, it’s so cute. It give the cartoonish vibe and it’s so simple. I love simple things. He took out most of the color and the “messines” of it. It’s super desaturated:) I love the bold lines, the confidence in them. Looking at it some more, I noticed the symbols in it. The table is clearly higher that the girl, she really has to reach far. In the original, the girl can touch the vase. I love it how he filled the space, it breathes more. I love the French touch, there is Choux pastry on the table.I also noticed that one of the legs of the table isn’t like the rest. Maybe the table will tilt on one side, or fall?

And I see all the things Francois is saying he felt about it. The girl is sad and deep in her thoughts. I see she is on her toes, streching and reaching, what I interpret as growth. She is reaching for the sky, the colors and I hope that she is reaching for the joy in life. The thing is, sadness is a part of the life, natural and it also goes away to make space for other emotions. I wonder if we would really feel the fullnes of joy without knowing the depth of sadness?

With that said, I am very excited to see further progress, what the next person did with Francois drawing.

Oups! Nobody took the next step of that game… Any volunteer?

One month of drawings…

One month ago I was deciding to apply my (art)working schedule again. So what was done? I don’t really remember, I don’t really remember what happen during those five weeks… I was drawing, but not really following the themas of each day…

Anyway, now here is what has been done. (not really sure if some drawings were done before or not, I guess I should add some dates behind…)

Just before adding those pictures to the article here is what I was ready to write:

« I don’t really know what to think… I feel void… Life is absurd, all of this has no sense… »

but finally, I feel better, by seeing them, I feel good. Those days were not useless!

About the process… Often I was having the « blank page syndrome »… I didn’t know what to draw… Important point : »What to draw? »

Here is a sum up of the main points of drawing:

1/ Decide to draw

2/ Answer to « What do I draw? »

3/ Decide « How to draw it? » (not 100%, keep some for spontaneity)

4/ Draw it (follow 3/ and add spontaneity)

5/ (optional) repeat (3)4 several times

6/ Look at it, think about it (then the drawer can discover many things about his drawing).

7/ Share it (optional)

Finding a theme for each day/session was not so important, now I will just draw, and keep one day for blog/sharing.

Don’t forget to draw!

Never throw a drawing away!

I want to tell you about a drawing. I really like it, I hope you like it too. Here is the story:

Some weeks ago I started a precise drawing of myself. You can see the eye in orange/red part, but something went wrong and I was not satisfied about it. So I stopped it and started a new one again. After hesitating, I decided to keep this first try (but it was close to go to the trash!)… Some days later, I decided to continue it… As the drawing was ruined in my mind, I was ready to take some risks with it, so I only draw some black lines in a very spontaneous way. And then I was so happy. A unique drawing but done when I was in two different state of mind, two different me were collaborating on it! The two styles make it less obvious and mysterious. And most important: never throw a drawing away, experiment on it! Be positive.

Losing control

Wednesday 12 may, almost half a year ago, I was starting to follow a schedule for my art activities. That was a great way for self-motivation and for killing procrastination. I was following this schedule and adjusting it every month in order to improve it. Then came summer vacation and important events around my activity. That was like a « fast forward ». Social online activity, art exhibition in South Korea, and a new exploration of a new fascinating idea about link between man and computer. All those things are so exciting, I’m feeling I’m not drawing, but discovering a new world. Because of those exciting events, I had to deal with a lot of things. Then I forgot the schedule. This loss of control was an open door for procrastination! While asking myself in the evening: » So what should I do tonight? », the lack of decision impose the « by default » solution which is => « sit in the sofa, and do nothing* »! (* nothing = facebook, stupid games, youtube TV, and so on).

Losing control
Losing control

Of course I was continuing to create my series about fractals, but in a less productive way. So now it’s time to take my hands back on the steering wheel.

I need to adapt the schedule now, because my aim is to continue by exploring the fractal series until having a significant number of artworks to apply for a gallery.

4 days a week:

Mondays: Mutation time! Free-time => Very spontaneous drawings, various technics, drawing games, whatever comes into my pen => this is to produce a random factor that may produce serendipity! => This should be done while listening to music!

Tuesdays: Trying several ideas which I will write during the week on my phone whenever they appear(often in the metro), lots of quick drawings in order to have the guideline for a new artwork. (try with or without music).

Wednesdays: Focus on one artwork (from one Wednesday’s idea). That should be the conclusion of a « one-week cycle ».

Thursdays: Online social activities (facebook page, getting internet contacts, blog entries, …).

Let’s see after 5 weeks if that works…

See you in December !

The toy shop!

Today, I want to tell you about something very personal. I want to tell you about a dream I was having very often when I was a child. First, you need to know that there was a toy shop just near the place I was living. For a 8 years old kid, that was like living beside the paradise! I loved to visit that store and, during long months, I was waiting for my birthday or for christmas, so I could get some toys from my family. I was a child so at that time, that was one of the most important thing for me.

The dream I was having many time was the following: In the middle of the night, when everybody was sleeping, I was waking up, alone in the store. That whole store, full of wonderful toys was just for me. Hundreds of toys, just for me! I felt that was the best thing that could happen to me! I was feeling such a happiness! I was so happy that I was running inside the shop, looking things here and there, hesitating between different toys… As I was almost choosing a game, I switched to another one that was looking better. I was running faster and faster, hesitating between many wonderful things but without choosing… And suddenly I was waking up before I could have played any of them! I can’t forget those dreams, such a happiness, followed by such a frustration and sadness! I don’t know why I was dreaming about it, but I have learn something very important from it: the focus. There are so many possibilities in life, so many things we can do… Starting to draw on monday, then playing with smartphone on tuesday, watching tv on wednesday, browsing on thursday, facebook on friday and so on… so finally not much drawing was done and I was loosing my time… Life is so precious, I don’t want to loose my time.

Sometimes, procrastination is just that there are too many toys in our shop… So, let’s focus!

Fractals, serendipity and opéra

Those days I’m doing a series about fractals. The main idea is that I am imitating the way computer programs are drawing. I will give more details about it in a separated article. Today I want to tell you about one drawing of that series:

Notung trägst du im Herzen.
Notung trägst du im Herzen.

From a blank page

When I started it on my blank page, I first wanted to draw a tree by doing the outline like a fractal. So I started to draw that black outline and the horizontal ground. Another graphic element of fractals is that there are some continuous colored surfaces inside it like this:

computer generated fractal
computer generated fractal

You can see the black part that looks like the black outline of the tree and the purple/red/yellow/green that looks like the red/yellow inside my tree. But, to make it less obvious, I wanted to extend the colors inside the trunc with a very thin red line that looks like blood which flows into an underground lake. I also wanted to draw the surface outside the tree in red… like a bloody burning world or something like this.

I did a mistake while drawing (the red stain just on the top of the lake), I was very angry about it.

 Dracaena cinnabari

The drawing was finished, but then started the most interresting part. I was looking for a title. The main elements of the drawing are 1-the tree, 2-the blood. So I was asking google about « tree blood ». The first answer  was about « Dracaena cinnabari ». This is a tree which surname is « dragon blood tree »!

Dracaena cinnabari
Dracaena cinnabari

I looked at my drawing again and I realized that the red and yellow surfaces inside the tree look like an eye, a dragon eye. Even the black leaves arround it looks like the rough scaly skin of a dragon. This dragon’s eye  seem to bleed because of the red flow from the tree to the lake. Then, suddently, something amazing appeared to me!

At that point, I had those elements: a tree, a defeated dragon and some blood. You can try to ask google about those 4 elements, you will find something new, but I didn’t need google’s help: that was obvious for me! The answer is Siegfried, an opera from Richard Wagner (I like his opéras a lot). A quick summary of its story is the following: Siegfried is a young man who lives in a forest, he is forging a sword which will help him to defeat a dragon who is holding the ring of the Nibelung. After Siegfried kills the dragon and drinks its blood, he will talk to a bird that will guide him to Brünnhilde  who will be loved by him.

Siegfried forging his sword
Siegfried forging his sword

I was very surprized to find so many elements of this opéra in my drawing! And this was pure (happy) accident! Except the tree and the blood, none of them was premeditated/ You can try to find all the elements of the opéra that are in the drawing, here is the (non-exhaustive?) list of them:

  • the tree

  • the blood
  • the dragon eye

  • the ring (gold circle in the eye)
  • the blade of the sword (horitontal yellow rectangle on the bottom)
  • the bird

  • the anvil (red shape done by inverting the 2 red parts arround the tree)

I was so angry about the red stain on the bottom, first I thought it was an error, but finally not, it’s the bird of Siegfried… Now I’m so happy about it!

What is an error? What is beautiful, what is ugly?

Where do those elements come from? My sub-conscious? God? Pure hazard? Are there other possible stories for this drawing? Does it really mater?

I don’t know… I just draw…

A productive procrastination

More than one month without a word about my schedule. This is a (very) long time. I was traveling for my vacation and spending many hours by doing « nothing ». This feeling of laziness is even bigger because the 14th of July, I decided to start a long project in order to produce a self-portrait. I have not done it. I was starting to study it, but I didn’t finish it. It is suspended. Here is the start of the study:

  • Self pictures (studying light)

Photo du 15-07-2014 à 21.25 #2 Photo du 15-07-2014 à 21.25 #3 Photo du 15-07-2014 à 21.26 Photo du 15-07-2014 à 21.27 #2

  • Then some lines

IMG_20140716_220337 IMG_20140717_091738 IMG_20140717_092633 IMG_20140717_092926

  •  Then three tries (pastels and ink // same in negative // watercolor)

IMG_20140717_093341 IMG_20140717_093410IMG_20140721_222620

You can notice in the drawings and in those drafts that I was also including the skull shape that I was discovering in a previous article.

But that was the (temporary?)end of this work. Why? There are two reasons:

  • Vacation: I was two weeks in Italy, enjoying sun and nature. Spending family time and doing some « carnet de voyage » drawings.
  • Digifun Art Festival! Some of my artwork has been selected to be part of this festival, I was focusing about it.

So I had time for work, and I procrastinated! But let’s see the bright side of life: I was not doing nothing, I was thinking, about drawings, about myself, about skulls and about the definition of art.

Here are my thoughts :

Idea #1  — Skulls

Skulls are fascinating. I was visiting the catacombs of Paris. So many skulls, real skulls, real people who were living in Paris more than 200 years ago… I chose and touched one of those skulls and I tried  to feel the connection with that person who was living in the 18th century, at least I was thinking a lot about it… I was touching his or her skull … That was fascinating! Will someone touch my skull after my death ?

IMG_20140731_110055 IMG_20140801_090136

I was also realizing that there are many art that were inspired by skulls… Probably obvious, but I guess we could make a much longer list!

A skull is the common point between life, death and identity… Fascinating!

Idea #2 — Art and science

As some of my electronic drawings were shown in Seoul in the Digifun Art Festival (see article here), I was trying to choose between focusing on electronic or traditional art. Tablet or Paper? Pixels or molecules? I like the touch of paper, but I also like the powerful image algorithms that can enhance images… Art is my hobby and computer science is my job, not really mixable. Those are like two sides of me that are not really cooperating… Dov, my friend, « teacher » and motivator, the one who has shown me how to open my eyes  inspired me this solution => I should reconcile those two skills. Those two parts of me should work together, not fight against each other. And the result is me, I will not copy someone’s else, I will walk my own way and will produce something unique (because we all are unique)

Idea #3 — When technology rules the world

Tablets, smartphones, connected objects, social networks, news 24 hours a day, video games, and much more, today the technology is everywhere around me. The big fear about technology in the 20th century was about robots that would be smart enough to control us. This is not what happen today. There are no clever robots, but technology is everywhere and mixed with the society. Technology has a big influence on our societies. It is changing us. Technology improvement is so fast now, that is arrives, we are not prepared to it, then mankind adapt to it… We are ruled by technology, not because it is clever, but because it is new and powerful. We are adapting to it, and the main force of the mankind evolution today is the adaptation to technology.

Technology is guiding us so, I will use it as a tool and an inspiration.

Last sunday, I was in a meetup in a parc in Paris. Dov asked me to draw the leaves of a tree. It’s always so hard to draw a tree. We were exchanging two words about it, he used the word « fractal ». This was a great opportunity, I will draw like a computer. I will draw the leaves the way computers are drawing it!

Not finished, the upper left white will be filled in black

Wow, it’s working! Usually a computer is programmed to draw like a human. I am a human and I was drawing like a computer ! Is computer my teacher? I told you, technology rules the world!

To be continued…

Digifun Art Festival

A new mobile art festival was taking place in Seoul in August this summer (details here). I was candidate for it and four of my artworks were selected.

There was many beautiful artworks in that exhibition. I’m sad I couldn’t be there to visit it, because it really looked amazing. Thank you Nicolas Morin who let me know about this exhibition and many thanks to Amy Chung who was leading this exposition very well.

Feedback #2

Two months ago, I’ve jumped into a new process. The main idea was to draw more and to kill procrastination. The beginning of this story is here. After one month, I’ve done a feedback about it and I’ve changed the process according to this one month experiment. The details are there. Then another month was spent. And now it’s time to see what happened!

What was planned:

  • 4 paintings
  • 4 studies
  • 4 long drawings
  • 4 blog evenings

What was done:

  •  3 paintings:

IMG_20140617_222921 IMG_20140624_223149 IMG_20140701_215745

  • 3 long drawings

IMG_20140619_215915 IMG_20140626_222209 IMG_20140706_222226

And I guess, the rest is about studies…

Some zentangle:

About a great movie: Sonatine.

Another good movie: True Grit.

Still Sonatine

Some tries about Ray Charles:

IMG_20140623_222545 IMG_20140623_215324 IMG_20140623_215236

Here are the good points:

– After two months, I like how my lines are getting better.

– 75% of the scheduled days were really used for draw. (I do not want 100%, because then pressure is too big).

– The new planning => sunday/monday + wednesday/thursday is much better, because there is a day « off » in the middle and it is working well.

– The compositions are getting better (but still need to work on it)

– A new game came out of this: each time I see a good movie, I do a drawing of it, then I send it to my (expert cinema) friend Christophe who tries to guess what movie it is! This is a lot of fun for him and for me.

Bad points:

In fact, there is only one, but it’s a big one: I have the feeling of going round in circles… Those are mostly one-shot exercices. I want to try a long term project, something bigger than just a drawing or just a painting, so at the end of the month, I can say: wow! that was a real big work. When I will be working, I will not start over from a blank page, but will continue on a big work, continue on a long way (not just a simple short trip, but a real long one!).

So, now the question is « What long duration project? »

Another point is => in 3 weeks I will be in vacation, which could be a problem to continue the schedule…

So, here are the adjustments for this time:

  • 3 weeks iteration instead of 4.
  • Those 3 weeks are dedicated to a project, let’s call it « Project alpha » (Sounds very secret, isn’t it?)
  • Blog evenings will be dedicated to blog or paper write about its progress and how things are working well or not.
  • Studies will be dedicated to do some tries (about composition, colors, lines or shapes or anything related to the project)
  • Long drawing could be used to try some prototypes of the project spontaneous tries.
  • Paintings will have the final project, a « beta version », and maybe another painting version (watercolor vs acrylics)

So what? What will be the subject of « Project Alpha »?

Hmmm, let me take a look around: I see, a fridge, a table, a computer… and myself! Well I think I’m more interesting than a fridge or a computer, so I will work on  a portrait of me !

Numeric art

Today I am thinking about numeric art versus non numeric art. Non numeric art is using traditional tools… paper, painting, pencils… Numeric art is using computers, files, image processing… But today I realize that often, I am using both of those technics together.

Let’s illustrate it with a few examples

  • Kieth Haring

Here is a drawing I’ve done about a Keith Haring statue that was exposed in 104 (a public cultural space in Paris).

traditional art
traditional art

Then I had an idea about it, I wanted to continue and to move the red surfaces to mutate it into a crazy thing. Here is the result:

Do you still recognize it?
numeric art

I like how my brain is fighting to understand it !

So what about it? It is numeric but it has been drawn on a piece of paper with traditional tools… Things are not just only black or white… How about exploring the millions of grey colors?

  • Image treatment

Screen printing was used a lot by artists (like Warhole) to produce series of variations from a single work. Image treatment is also a great tool to produce variations from an original work. Here is an example I did:

Virtual variation 1

Virtual variation 2
variation 4

  • Expressing with filters

  • Positive and Negative

Sometimes this negative world is much better than the original one !

real positive painting
Real positive painting
Virtual negative image

  • Image enhancement

I sometimes also use electronic tools to enhance images:

– producing real black and real white:

real black and white
Virtual real black and white

– using hue, contrast, and picture noise:

Google 3 skuls
Google 3 skulls

So Numeric tools came very naturally into the creation process. This is how it is in 2014!

One month ago, I was setting to myself a new drawing schedule (see here). After one month, now it’s time  1 -to feedback 2- to do changes in the planning for next month.

What was planned:

– 5 painting sessions

– 5 long drawing sessions

– 4 blog reading/writing evenings

– 4 studies of a special aspect

What was done:

4 paintings:

IMG_20140514_211021 IMG_20140521_225251 IMG_20140529_224055 IMG_20140606_235811

All of them was done with acrylics. I’ve learn that a uniform background is sometimes a good thing… making it less uniform (it happen by accident) is even better to add some mystery, or to make it less obvious. It was not easy to paint small things. The fourth painting is not so good (despite the model i used is a masterpiece), but the global shape is interesting(like a big spade in the middle). This gives some structure to the painting and first catch the eye. I’m happy about this idea and I will explore it in the future.

5 long drawing sessions

IMG_20140515_222808 IMG_20140522_233412 IMG_20140601_225617 IMG_20140609_230014 IMG_20140612_223941

This is what I like more. I like because, because of the « flow » mental state it involves. Then I can do long detailed things. It sometimes takes a long time to perform  a uniform color shape.Sometimes it was not easy to know exactly what to draw. The last two of them were done mainly for my kid.

4 Blog reading/writing

I am happy of the first article. To write about the process is good to take time to think about it and probably to progress.

4 studies of a special aspect

It was very interesting about the skull studies and the body parts. I think this slightly influence the lines of my other drawings. That was not easy to find a subject each time and to be spontaneous.

Good points:

– I did much more drawing than if I didn’t schedule those evenings.

– I’m happy about them.

– The fact to draw regularly make it continuous (I don’t start from zero again between two drawing sessions)

Bad points:

– Only 80% of the schedule was done.

– Sometimes I had to cancel a session, but then I was late and I had some backlog. This was not a good sensation.

– That was not easy to find an idea each time.

Improvements for next month:

=> when a session is cancelled, then I will not do it at all (to avoid backlog).

=> the blog session will also be dedicated to inspiration (i.e. to find some ideas for sessions of the week).

=> planning changed a bit :

– sunday: blog (and preparing week sessions)

– monday: study (more spontaneous).

– tuesday: painting

-wednesday: rest (maybe a movie he he he).

-thursday: long drawing.

– friday and saturday: nothing (i.e. weekend).

Of course I will also draw in addition of the scheduled sessions 🙂

Next feedback in one month 🙂

I hope you enjoyed reading this.

Drawing on maps!

Yesterday was a meetup of « Free drawing in the capital P ». One of the (many) reason why those meetups are great is that we never know what will happen, and it’s always full of surprises. Dov is suggesting an idea, then we use that idea to draw.

Why I like it:

  • This initial idea is taking multiple directions depending on who is drawing (depending on his style, mood, feelings, …) .
  • This is a very good way to try something new, to get out of our natural scope, to break our silly unconscious norms.
  • I like the process it involes for me: (1)- surprise, (2)- reflexion (how to do it?), (3)- experiment, (4)- when the result is good, continue in the same way, (5)- go back to (2) with a new idea and start again.
  • The result is a mix of good and less good things. I learn a lot from good things: what is working well, but even more from less good things (what does not work, what to change to make it works?)

So here are my maps =>

Clic to see it big !

Heigh ho!

Here is the result of some drawings done in the past days. Now I apply a pre-defined schedule.  The idea is « Draw, then inspiration will come » instead of « Wait inspiration, then draw ». I’ve started it wednesday 12 may:

Now I will work 4 evenings per weeks with the following themes:

  •  mondays => read other drawers blogs, write about drawings (on real paper, sorry)
  • tuesdays => study a special aspect (line, surface, colors, …) => spontaneous and repetitive
  • wednesdays => painting
  • thursdays => a unique drawing (careful long work)

Then in one month I will look behind and change it according to what happend.

Here is the result of those sessions:

Drawing (even when I don’t want to) instead of waiting inspiration seem to be a good way to kill procrastination! I will see if it continues to work well in the future!

This is the Voice !

How to turn a stupid thing into something less stupid… Hmm I guess by doing something even more stupid! Then the first one will comparatively looks less stupid.

Saturday night I was watching a very stupid TV show: « The voice ». That was a bit boring… I decided to make stupid drawings on my tablet to make it a bit more funny! And really, that was so fun! You can’t imagine my son, my wife and I laughing out loud while I was doing those stupid drawing! I will always remember it !

A good drawing is not necessarily a beautiful drawing… Please think about it !

Hopper Games – Drawing with my friend from Indonesia

Hi there, a lil about me, I am Vari from Indonesia, a Chinese girl born in Jakarta on 1985, I’ve started drawing since primary school and keep on drawing up till now. I draw on daily basis since I work as a drawing instructor on an after-school program for 2 – 12 years old kids. I can say that most of my drawings are categorized as cartoon and you will find out that it is quite cheerful.

Hello! I’m François. I’m from Paris in France. I was born there in 1974. My drawing experience started as a kid, but my school teachers told me I was not a drawer. I believed them and I stopped… Six month ago, I’ve understood my teachers were wrong, so I started to draw again. I like art and philosophy, they inspire me for drawing. I have imagination and I like to play with it.

We are trying to do a blog about experiments on our drawing. Each of us will draw something on a blank white paper and the person on the other side of the world will continue the drawing and put some color on it. We guess we put our taste, our mood as well into the drawing, we are free to change the drawing or copy it and add something. This is like doing chemical experiments… What will be the result of the mix of style and moods??

Here is how the first try took place:

To find a subject about drawing, I have chosen a book with paintings of Edward Hopper. He was an american painter from the 20′s century. He lived in Paris, then in America and I love the melancoly of his paintings. The one I choosed is called “Room in New York” it has been painted in 1932. The couple on that painting lives together but they don’t care about each other… and are bored.

I also wanted to add some surrealist things in that drawing so it is not just a simple copy. I changed the head of the man into a tiger’s head and the woman’s head into a bird’s head… The man is reading a newspapper, he is a bit “macho” like a tiger and the girl is playing piano, artistic like a bird. Here is what I have drawn:

I was using a simple black pen and I did it in one try on a A4 paper.

Actually, this experiment is Francois’ idea, I was not too excited about it until I start redrawing the picture he sent to me.
He didn’t tell me anything about the drawing, I didn’t even know that there is Edward Hopper’s drawing, so I just redraw it with my style. The result is quite different and we have a new story to tell from the drawing.
For me, Francois’ drawing looks quite serious, he has some thoughts about what he draw, not merely a spontaneous drawing. I was curious about his perception on his own drawing, but he didn’t want to tell me about it, he said he want me to be free in expressing any of my idea,
so after couples of days I decided to do it,.. At night, after work, I was so tired but am trying to grab a marker and redraw his drawing, I tried so many times (more than 10 papers) to get what I want. After I feel satisfied, I redraw it on 2 pieces of paper (A4, landscape),

I am very happy about the drawing and enjoyed the process very much, I forget everything, I don’t remember that I am tired, I feel relax and smiled a lot, then I share it to Francois and it doubled the excitement! 😀

I was looking forward to see Vari’s drawing. I was so curious about it. When I’ve seen it, that was amazing! The result is so great! We still can see Hopper’s set with a husband reading a newspaper and his wife playing the piano, but there is no more melancholy! Now this is a really happy room!
The bird is playing the piano while the tiger is reading a story to his spouse. She is playing for him. They are happy. There are three wonderful details:the painting of them on the wall, the flowers in the middle and the eye of the bird that is looking at him subtitly.
I love the mutations of those drawings, how the situation has changed. This is not only drawing.

I am looking forward for another experiment…
I draw something for Christmas and asked Francois to continue the drawing, I guess we will put it here as well, for our second posts 😀
